Welcome to the New
Bearcat Online Email System

by Amin Shafie

The University of Cincinnati has purchased and deployed a new email system from the Mirapoint Corporation. The new system replaces the hardware and the software of Bearcat Online, but UC will keep the name, Bearcat Online, and access to the new system will remain through the same UC web site at email.uc.edu.

The new Bearcat Online is a state-of-the-art, Internet-based system. It provides anti-spam, anti-virus, auto-reply, calendar, user-defined filter, forward, IMAP, POP, and WebMail services. These features are comparable to those of popular Internet-based systems such as AOL, Hotmail, & YAHOO! Mail. Although the system is web-based, users will still be able to use popular desktop email clients, such as Eudora and Outlook, to access their accounts.

The University purchased this new system to provide improved email services to our entire UC community, especially UC students. The University plans to use Bearcat Online to communicate official University information - financial aid announcements, registration and enrollment information, course cancellations, etc. - to students. Therefore, as part of the deployment, all registered UC students (as well as all faculty and staff) have been issued Bearcat Online accounts. You can determine your username and your default password by entering the requested personal information on the E-mail Services account verification page.

If you are a new user, your default password is the first four digits of your birth date (MMDD) and the last four digits of your Student or Employee ID number.

If you are a current Bearcat Online system user, UCit automatically migrated your mailbox to the new system during the week of 8 September 2003, and you continue to use the same password to access your account.

For a quick overview on how to use the new email system, please access the "Basic Operations" online guide. For information on more "Advanced Features," please access the online guide.

We hope you find the new Bearcat Online convenient and easy to use. If you have any questions, please contact the UCit Help Desk at (513) 556-3785.
