UCit Upgrades OZ for the 2003-'04 Academic Year
by Ellen Davis
On Saturday, 20 September, UCit is implementing a major upgrade to the OZ system, by replacing the DEC AlphaServer 1000A, running the Tru64 Unix operating system, with a Sun Microsystems SunFire 280R, running the Solaris 8 Operating Environment. Hardware specifications for the new OZ are as follows:
- SunFire 280R
- 68 G mirrored internal drive space
- 70 G user drive space allocated from the Storage Area Network (SAN)
- 4 G memory
- DLT 8000 tape drive
- Two 900 MHz UltraSPARC-III processors
- Two power supplies
For more information, please visit Sun's site at http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/280r.
The new system will run Solaris, another version of the UNIX operating system, so normal UNIX commands - ls, rm, mv, cp, etc. - will be available.
The same diverse range of software - listed below - will remain available, as well.
- Apache web server with FrontPage extensions
- FrontPage extensions (using port 8000)
- Compilers C, C++, Fortran
- SAS
- pine
- SSH version 2
- Perl
- sh, tcsh, bash shells
- OZtools
- CGIwrap (so you can run CGI programs)
- Counters for web pages
But some changes are in store.
UCit strongly encourages you to use the homepages.uc.edu alias in your URLs. For example, your homepage is http://homepages.uc.edu/~yourOZusername NOT http://oz.uc.edu/~yourOZusername. Any URL in the format http://oz.uc.edu/~username will be automatically redirected to http://homepages.uc.edu/~username. (By using the homepages alias, your URLs will remain the same, no matter where the pages are actually hosted.)
The http://oz.uc.edu URL will be restricted to system web pages.
SSH version 1 will no longer be supported. SSH clients that only support version 1 will not work to connect to the new system. Use version 2.
The username and password you use for your OZ account will be the same as the one you use for a computer labs login. This new, shared username and password is called your EduKey account. Each account will have a minimum quota of 10 M disk space (with more space available on request to [obsolete email address deleted].
You will be able to send print jobs to the printers in the UCit labs.
Your home directory - and therefore your web directory - name will change.
You will need to recompile any executable programs.
Anyone who has an account on OZ when UCit cuts over to the new system will have his or her files automatically moved to the new system. Usernames will stay the same, but passwords will be changed to EduKey passwords.
