Office: the Other Update
by Tony Quallen
When you think about "update," certain things may come readily to mind. First, you may think about keeping your anti-virus software up-to-date. This ensures protection from the latest identified viruses that are circulating around the Internet. Second, you probably remember that you make sure you are up to date on various service patches for your computer's operating system. This provides protection for your computer from unwanted intruders, as well as performance enhancements to keep your system running smoothly. But another piece of software - Office - may go untouched.
Microsoft Office needs regular updates for the same reasons that your operating system does: to keep intruders at bay, and performance at its peak.
You can keep your Office system, much like Windows, up-to-date by going to Microsoft's web site. A link in Internet Explorer will take you to the Windows Update page. To access the link, open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu at the top of the screen. Select Windows Update. When the page loads, you will see a list of links across the top of the page. Click on the link for Office Update. Mid-screen, you will see Check for Updates. When you click on this link for the first time, you will see a security warning; click YES. Microsoft's site will scan your computer and list the appropriate updates. Click on the check mark next to each update you want to install, then click on Start Installation. When the process is complete, you may be prompted to restart your computer.
You may want to revisit the Office Update page to make sure that you have all of the updates for your system. By following these simple instructions, you very well may keep your system free from viruses, as well as keeping it running smoothly.
