Campus Computer Census
by Michael Lieberman
In order to understand the computer needs of the UC community, UCit undertook a survey of computers on all of UC's campuses. The results are in (except for most departments in the College of Medicine), and are as follows:
Of 9,595 computers reported, 8.91% (or 855) are Macintosh, 3.56% (342) are Unix machines, and the remainder (87.52%) are Windows based machines. The largest users of Macintosh computers were the College of Conservatory Music (CCM) and the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). CCM utilized 191 Macs out of a total of 436 computers (43.8%), and DAAP utilized 115 Macs out of a total of 279 computers (41.2%). On a percentage basis, the unit with the highest percentage of Macs is Media Center Public Relations, with 21 out of 37 computers (56.7%) bearing the Apple logo.
The unit with the greatest number of total computers was the College of Arts and Sciences with 1,271 computers reported, followed by the College of Engineering with 823, and University College with 690. Engineering also led the way with the number of Unix boxes, with 253 (71.8% of the total number of Unix machines reported in this census).
These findings, which are not surprising, indicate that UC is primarily a Windows based computing environment, although for areas of graphic design the Macintoshes are more popular. As with most competing products, different computers have different strengths, and the type of job required will dictate which type of computer to use.
