Paper Bills: Going the Way of the Dinosaur
by Anna Dill-Hartford
Electronic billing, which UCit implemented in February, is rapidly becoming popular among students. Within days, nearly 400 students had signed up to receive electronic billing notification instead of a paper bill.
The process works like this:
- The student signs up for electronic billing via Web Services.
- The student is sent email notification that his or her bill is ready.
- The student logs into Web Services to view or print the bill (or both).
- The bill is in PDF (Portable Document Format) and includes a scanable barcode for payment remittance.
Phase II of the project is already underway, with scheduled completion by Fall Quarter 2004. At that time, it will become mandatory for all students to receive their bills electronically.
Each student's Bearcat Online email address will be the default location to which his or her email will be sent. (The student will have the option of creating a forwarding address within the Bearcat Online Mirapoint system.)
UCit expects the completed electronic billing system to save the University between $200,000 and $300,000 in paper and mailing costs.
