What is Web Analytics?

  • Web analytics is the study of online behavior. This information can be used to improve the site(s). There are two categories of analytics:
    • Off-site Web analytics includes the measurement of a Web site's potential audience (opportunity), share of voice (visibility), and buzz (comments) on the Internet as a whole.
    • On-site Web analytics measures a visitor's journey once they are on your Web site. On-site Web analytics also measures the performance of your Web site in a commercial context.

Urchin is the right choice for UC.

  • Web Communications purchased Urchin for campus Web administrators.
    • UCit is providing hosting and system administration for Urchin.
    • UCit has installed and tested the product to ensure its viability.
    • The data remains at UC.
      • Log Data from “WWW” is available back to 01/01/2007.
  • Flexible Web-Based Interface.
    • Interface is always available, 24x7x365.
    • Can be viewed using the following browsers:
      • PC: Internet Explorer 6.0 & 7.0, Firefox 2.0 & 3.0
      • Mac: Firefox 2.0 & 3.0
    • Data is On-Demand.
      • Data is freely available from the previous day; beginning at 6:00 am.
      • Static and monthly views can also be produced similar to WebTrends
    • Date Range Comparison.
      • Ability to compare two user-defined date ranges for a single topic or directory
        • e.g. March 2007 verses March 2008
  • By using a “Log Analyzer” as opposed to a “Page Tag Analyzer” the entire Web site can be reported on. Including Errors and status codes.

Requesting Access.

  • For security reasons Urchin is password protect through UC's Central Login. Steps for gaining access:
    • Request access via E-mail through webcommunications@uc.edu
    • Please Include:
      • Name, 6+2 (e.g.. TJ Iaciofano, iacioftj)
      • Web site you would like to report on (e.g www.uc.edu/hr/)
      • Web server your Web site is hosted (e.g. www.uc.edu or business.uc.edu)
    • Once the request is received, Web Communications will process it accordingly.
      • Note: Not all log files can be studied through Urchin. UCit and Web Communications are working on adding new log sources to expand this. Requests will be dealt in a reasonable timeframe within our current resources.

Why WebTrends has been discontinued.

  • Outdated profile info – WebTrends uses profile info provided by the software company that helps determine the type of traffic that comes to you Web site. These profiles are outdated.
    • e.g. The browser Firefox does not show up in traffic reports. Firefox is now considered a mainstream browser and its use must be evaluated.
  • Static / monthly data sets - WebTrends ran on a scheduled job methodology, which means your data can only be delivered in single month views. It is essentially only a snapshot in time of your data.
    • e.g. Reports are static Word Doc. or PDFs
  • Charges associated with operating WebTrends could not justify the licensing for a new version of the product. Web Communications and UCit have provided Urchin free of charge for campus Web administrators.
  • UCit overhead on maintaining an outdated WebTrends system was immense and intensive. Urchin allows for more flexibility and faster turnaround times with little effort.
