Update for December 2008

Research Faculty and Staff,

UC researchers have much to celebrate. The university ended fiscal year 2008 $20 million ahead of 2007, with a research-dollar total of more than $353 million. This total puts us ahead of our 2010–11 goal of $350 million. Many colleges saw big gains, but the colleges of engineering and arts and sciences recorded the biggest increases.

Industry support increased by nearly 70 percent—a tribute to the collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit of our research faculty.

You can download the full Sponsored Research Services report at www.srs.uc.edu. A “fast facts” data card is also available at www.uc.edu/ucResearch/Facts_and_Figures.html.

Congratulations to all on such a great year!

And, as always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to check out research.uc.edu.

Vice President for Research

NEWS/GRANTS

Monthly Research Data Available on Gateway
It’s important—particularly in difficult funding times—to monitor progress of sponsored research awards and expenditures. Monthly reports for the university and each college are available on Researcher’s Gateway under the “Grants” link. Data for the first part of fiscal year 2009 (July through September) indicates that expenditures are up by about 5 percent over this time last year. Proposal submissions are on par with fiscal year 2008. Overall funding is down compared to this time last year, which could be due to a no-cost extension period, multi-year awards that are given in one lump sum or grants that have transferred with departing faculty. Data for October and November is still being totaled. Please review the monthly updates and continue to visit the “Grants” link to find new funding opportunities.

2009 Grant-Writing Workshops
More than 250 people participated in grant-writing workshops offered in 2008. Application deadlines for 2009 sessions begin in March. Information about 2009 grant-writing workshops is available at www.uc.edu/ucResearch/GrantWritingWorkshop.html.

Study Section Members: Resources to Junior Faculty
UC is fortunate to have many faculty who are permanent members of National Institutes of Health study sections. Junior faculty might find it useful to contact a faculty member on a particular study section in order to find out if their grant is a good fit with that study section and to obtain advice on how to position their grant to go to the right study section. Study section faculty can provide valuable information on how a study section actually reviews grants. To view a full list of UC faculty on NIH study sections, visit researchgateway.uc.edu/nihstudysectionmembers.cfm.

Research a “Proudly Cincinnati” Focus
Research initiatives are a major part of UC’s billion-dollar Proudly Cincinnati capital campaign. Fundraising efforts will be aimed at increasing support for undergraduate research scholarships, research infrastructure and interdisciplinary research. Visit http://www.uc.edu/proudlycincinnati/ to learn more about campaign priorities. Specifics on research initiatives can be found at giveto.uc.edu/giving_initiatives/research_initiatives.html.

Attention Faculty Submitting NIH Proposals: Switch to Adobe Forms
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has provided updated details and dates pertaining to the transition schedule from PureEdge to Adobe-based grant application forms for electronic submissions of SF424 Research and Related (R&R) applications. This changeover also applies to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/ National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Food and Drug Administration.

New Grants Awarded in November
Writing winning grants is tough. We understand the hard work that goes into preparing a proposal and want to make sure that effort doesn’t go unnoticed. Check out your great work—and that of your colleagues—at uc.edu/ucresearch/new_grant_winners.html.
