Update for October 2008

Research Faculty and Staff,

It’s a busy election season and I’m sure all of you are anxious to learn more about the value each candidate places on funding science. You can learn more about each party’s views on this topic by checking out Science Debate 2008, an effort that began last November to bring science back into the political dialogue. Look for info on the Science Debate 2008 site about the Innovation 2008 Conference

And, mark your calendars for Nov. 13—the annual State of Research presentation here at UC. This year, we’ll have experts on hand to share information with you about science funding efforts at the state and federal levels.

And, as always, we welcome your feedback and encourage you to check out research.uc.edu.

Sandra Degen, PhD
Vice President for Research

NEWS/GRANTS

Call for Information
The Office of Research is creating a list of UC faculty who chair or serve as members on National Institutes of Health (NIH) study sections. This list will be shared with faculty interested in learning more about study sections. Ad hoc members will not be added to this list. Please send information about your leadership or membership roles in NIH study sections to sandra.degen@uc.edu.

Save the Date: State of Research
Mark your calendars for 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, for the university’s annual presentation of research data. Sandra Degen, PhD, vice president for research, will be joined in the Vontz Center’s Rieveschl Auditorium by Donna Dean of Lewis-Burke Associates, and Margie Rolf, of UC’s governmental relations office. The three will provide an overview of UC’s research enterprise and highlight state and federal issues and opportunities related to research funding.

IP Office Adds to Team
The intellectual property office is pleased to announce two new members to its team. Sandip Patil, PhD, has joined the intellectual property office as senior licensing associate. Patil works closely with Ellen Monson, PhD, director of technology transfer and commercialization. He is responsible for part of the biomedical portfolio. Patil earned his PhD in cancer research from the department of biochemistry at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. He received his postdoctoral training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Kentucky. Patil has broad experience in a variety of biomedical specialties including signal transduction, molecular imaging, proteomics, cardiovascular and diabetes research and is currently completing an MBA. Patil can be reached at (513) 558-5621 or sandip.patil@uc.edu.

Lynn Briggs has joined the intellectual property office as a licensing associate. Briggs is responsible for material transfer agreements (MTA) and confidentiality agreements. She began her career as a paralegal and went on to build two of her own start-up companies. Most recently, she served as fundraiser and executive director of an Australian university foundation. Briggs can be reached at (513) 558-3098 or lynn.briggs@uc.edu.
Video: Antonio Scarpa’s Visit to UC
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Antonio Scarpa, director of scientific review at the National Institutes of Health, gave a presentation to the UC community titled “Challenges and Opportunities Facing Peer Review:  A Vision Ensuring Its Strategic National Value.” You can view the video of Scarpa’s presentation at http://aitlvideo.uc.edu/degen/scarpa.html.

Faculty Research Grants Program Accepting Applications
Applications are now being accepted for the 2008–09 Faculty Research Grants Program sponsored by the University Research Council (URC). This funding program provides summer stipend or research support for the development of faculty research and scholarship. It is designed primarily for those in the initial stages of developing their research careers. Awards are limited to $6,500 in research support or $8,000 ($4,000/month) for two months of summer stipend support. Successful applicants are expected to present records of prior activity that indicate a devotion to scholarship and the potential for high-quality achievement. Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. For more information on eligibility and required application materials, visit www.uc.edu/ucresearch/funding_opportunities.html.

CARE/Crawley Building Captured on Video
Those who missed the grand opening celebration of the CARE/Crawley Building, or have yet visited the new structure, can view a video of the building by visiting www.health.uc.edu/CARE-Crawley. The video includes footage of exterior and interior features that may not be visible by casually strolling through the building.

REMINDER: NIH Submission Policy
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) now requires that the final version of any peer-reviewed journal article resulting from NIH-funded activities be submitted to the PubMed Central repository, where it will be available to the public within 12 months after the journal article is published. Read more about this policy  at http://libraries.uc.edu/hsl/. The NIH issued a reminder about these changes in September. You can read the full reminder and implications of noncompliance at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-119.html.

New Grants Awarded in September
Writing winning grants is tough. We understand the hard work that goes into preparing a proposal and want to make sure that effort doesn’t go unnoticed. Check out your great work—and that of your colleagues—at uc.edu/ucresearch/new_grant_winners.html.

SPOTLIGHT ON: TOOLS FOR RESEARCHERS

UCit Offers Research Tools
The university’s Office of Information Technologies (UCit) not only supports the instructional community, but also provides the research community with specialized services and offerings designed to provide leading-edge technical services and maximize the research dollar. These services include:

Data Storage/Backup—UCit can save you money by hosting your data on its servers.  The department or research group will no longer have to maintain and backup its servers. Users will have access to their files at all times. UCit also offers a self-serve restore feature so the client can restore lost files from the data backups.  Charges for this service vary depending on the needs of the user.
Server Hosting—UCit offers server and storage arrays in its secure data center, located in the Medical Sciences Building, on a recharge basis. Maintaining and housing servers can be expensive and time/resource consuming. Both server and storage arrays are available within the data center in the Medical Sciences Building on a recharge basis at reasonable rates. Clients retain administrative access to the servers and are responsible for their maintenance, but UCit can perform these services as well.
File-Sharing—Research groups can take advantage of multiple solutions to share large files within and outside the institution. UCit can create accounts in UCFileSpace and Microsoft SharePoint or can create a Research Group Organization within Blackboard, allowing groups at UC and at other institutions to share data and files. Up to 10 gigabytes of data of shared storage is available on UCFileSpace and Blackboard at no charge.
Web Site Design/Hosting—UCit offers its expertise in creating Web sites, wikis and blogs, and can also create sites with database backends. UCit can host the Web site or you can host it on a departmental server. UCit can also add podcasting and streaming media links to your Web site.  Charges are based depending on user needs.
Video Conferencing—Video conferencing capabilities are available from your desktop. UCit can also stream your research conferences and seminars in digital video format. Elluminate, an online conference tool, allows groups to meet virtually, with voice, video and file sharing.
Security Consulting—Free security consultations are available for groups who maintain their own servers.
Network Traffic Analysis—UCit offers network traffic analysis for connections to high performance computing (HPC) servers or other specialized servers to determine if those devices warrant a higher bandwidth connection, i.e. moving from 100Mbp to 1Gbp connection.
Software Negotiation—Assistance is available for software licensing, purchasing, and vendor and contract management.
Database Analysis—Database analysts are available to help with your research projects on a fee-for-service basis.

If you want more information on these offerings, please contact Michael Lieberman, dean of instructional and research computing at michael.lieberman@uc.edu. More information at http://research.ucit.uc.edu.
