Frequently Asked Questions

WHO CAN USE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES (UHS)?
Registered students and their spouses can be seen at University Health Services.

WHAT DOES THE UHS COST?
Primary care is prepaid for students insured under the UC Student Health Insurance Program (SHI).

Students insured under other policies will be charged fee for service.  Co-pays will be required the day of service.  Claims are filed as a courtesy to you, however, you will be responsible for anything your insurance does not pay in a timely fashion.  UHS is non provider for any insurance company other than UC's Student Health Insurance.   Spouses of UC students also may be seen for a fee.

WHO CAN SEE MY RECORDS?
Medical records are confidential and are not released to anyone - including parents, friends, and/or university departments - without your written consent.

WHO STAFFS THE UHS FACILITIES?
The medical staff consists of full-time and part-time board certified physicians.  The UHS nurses, medical assistants, X-ray techs, and pharmacists are all licensed professionals.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?
We recommend students call in advance to schedule an appointment.  In the case of an urgent condition, we will be happy to see you on a walk-in basis.  Our specialty clinics are by appointment only.

WHAT UHS SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE?

ALLERGY INJECTIONS.  Allergy desensitization maintenance, prescribed by your personal physician, can be continued.  UHS does not initiate allergy injections. You supply the antigenic extract and written instructions from your doctor.  Serums are retained at the UHS for your convenience.  To ensure against reactions after an allergy injection, you are required to wait 20 minutes.  Nearly all shock-like reactions occur within this time and emergency equipment is available.

PHARMACY.  Pharmacists are available at both facilities to provide medications prescribed by UHS physicians and UC specialists to whom you may be referred.  The pharmacists, in addition to filling your prescription, will discuss with you the proper use of your medication.  To keep prices low, payment is required at the time of dispensing.  Contact lens may be also be purchased at our pharmacy, however, you must be a current contact wearer and present a prescription from your eye doctor.

WOMEN'S HEALTH CLINIC.  The Gynecology Clinic provides examination, treatment, counseling service and follow-up in regard to routine gynecological care and contraception.

DERMATOLOGY CLINIC.  The clinic is available to students only by referral from a UHS physician.  The Dermatology Clinic provides examination, treatment, and follow-up for routine skin problems requiring dermatology services.

CLINICAL LABORATORY.  Some tests can be performed in the UHS CLIA-approved laboratory.  A reference laboratory is used for tests requiring highly technical procedures.  Results are generally available within 24 hours.

X-RAY SERVICE.  X-rays ordered by a UHS physician will be promptly taken and developed.  Your doctor will view your x-rays and forward them to a staff radiologist at University Hospital who will provide final interpretation.

SPORTS MEDICINE.  The UHS provides primary team physician care and coordinates a sports medicine program for all Bearcat teams.  Care for sports-related and orthopedic problems is also available for all students.

MENTAL HEALTH CLINIC.  Evaluation and brief psychotherapy are available by appointment.  Referrals for psychiatric care also may be arranged.

Policy on Medical History Reports and Immunizations

The University requires certain special student groups (i.e., international and health professionals) to submit medical history, immunization records and obtain TB skin testing at matriculation.  Some academic programs or departments (e.g., athletes, health professionals) also have additional medical requirements which may be met in the UHS.

If you are an international student, you must register at the UHS and may be required to have TB testing and/or chest x-ray.
