PARENTING
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT?

Remember when you bought your first car, you got a manual and perhaps even a warranty. When you buy an appliance it comes with a very detailed manual and even a handy trouble shooter guide………..where is the trouble shooting guide for parenting?

Parenting is sometimes frightening, sometimes challenging but always a rewarding role. Unfortunately there is no warranty for newborns, no return policy for teenagers and no guarantee that when your college bound child leaves home, that they will stay gone. In the medical and helping profession we take an oath to “first do no harm”. As parents the first rule should be to “trust your own instincts”. You know your child better than anyone else; you are the professional when it comes to understanding your child.

In today’s world of busy commerce, deadlines, long hours, traffic jams and demanding life schedules, sometimes our parenting skills get lost in the chaos and children soon learn how to manipulate their environment to suit their needs. As parents it can be frustrating and sometimes confusing as to how do you know what is right?

Some helpful tips:
• Set clear guidelines and expectations with your child about behavior, values and communication.
• Try to have family dinner at least once a week to catch up on family things and discuss current issues affecting the family.
• Make sure rewards and/or consequences match the incident and that they are age appropriate.
• Delegate chores around the house so you don’t feel overwhelmed coming home from work each day.
• Remember to watch your body language and what it says when you walk in the door each day. Children feel love through your facile expressions not just your words.
