Lieutenant Colonel Black commissioned in 2002 as a Transportation Corps Officer from the United States Army Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA.

He served in the following leadership and staff positions:  Service & Support Detachment Commander, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Iraq and Fort Carson, CO; Detachment Commander, B CO, 1st Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), South America and Fort Bragg, NC; Commander, C CO, 3rd Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC; Executive Officer, 3rd Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC; Brigade S3, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC;  as well as the Field Grade Assignments Officer, Psychological Operations Branch, Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, KY. He currently serves as the Professor of Military Science for the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.

His military education includes: Transportation Officer Basic Course; Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Officer Advanced Course, Psychological Operations Qualification Course; Command and General Staff College, Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC); and Airborne School.

He holds the following degrees:  Masters of Science Degree in Safety and Environmental Management from West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV; Bachelor of Science Degree in Sport Management from West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV.

He served on one combat tour to Iraq.

His military awards and decorations include the following:  Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Iraqi Campaign Medal with one service star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, and the German Armed Forces Parachutist Badge.
