Program Requirements

An overview of prerequisites and course requirements for the International Co-op Program. The requirements are slightly different for German, Japanese, French and Spanish.

German

  • No prior language proficiency required.
  • All students take PD 2010: Exploring Culture, Life, and Work Abroad (3 credit hours) as soon as possible after being accepted into the International Co-op Program (ICP).
  • Complete one of the following series to acquire language proficiency:
    • Intensive German on campus, end of summer semester between the third and fourth years, followed by ICP German course fall semester of the fourth year, OR
    • Beginning German on campus in the fall semester of the fourth year, followed by intensive German in Germany beginning of spring semester (just prior to beginning co-op job).
  • Two semesters of international co-op, living and working abroad, in spring and summer. (A one-semester assignment may be possible for some majors.)

Japanese

  • No prior language proficiency required.
  • All students take PD 2010: Exploring Culture, Life, and Work Abroad (3 credit hours) as soon as possible after being accepted into the International Co-op Program (ICP).
  • Complete one of the following series to acquire language proficiency:
    • Intensive Japanese on campus, at the end of summer semester between the third and fourth years, followed by a Japanese course in the fall semester of the fourth year, OR
    • Intensive Japanese in Japan at the end of summer semester between the third and fourth years, followed by a Japanese course in the fall semester of the fourth year. We recommend that students have a semester of Japanese or use online language learning tools to master Hiragana and basic conversation before taking intensive Japanese in Japan.
  • Two semesters of international co-op, living and working abroad, in spring and summer. (A one-semester assignment may be possible for some majors.)

French or Spanish

  • All students take PD 2010: Exploring Culture, Life, and Work Abroad (3 credit hours) as soon as possible after being accepted into the International Co-op Program (ICP).
  • Complete one of the following to acquire language proficiency. Students should work closely with the ICP director to determine which option to select:
    • Two to four years of high school French or Spanish plus one to two semesters of language instruction at UC
    • Two to four years of high school French or Spanish plus an online course or tools to increase proficiency
    • Intensive in-country language course may be available in some locations just before starting the co-op job.
  • Two semesters of international co-op, living and working abroad, in spring and summer. (A one-semester assignment may be possible for some majors.)
