Definition

Brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogratory, or negative messages and insults toward minorty groups or individual minority group members

Stereotype Threat

Definition

Being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one's group. Research results show that performance in academic contexts can be harmed by the awareness that one's behavior might be viewed through the lens of racial and/or gender stereotypes. Research has also identified several strategies that effectively reduce the impact of stereotype threat.
