Internationally Recognized Expert on Metacognition and Student Success's Visit to UC

Saundra McGuire, PhD

Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire, Director Emerita of the LSU Center for Academic Success and Retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry, is an internationally recognized chemical educator, author and lecturer who has travelled the globe promoting sure-fire strategies to help students, including those underrepresented in science and math professions, to be successful in their coursework and careers.

Dr. McGuire visited UC on Wednesday, September 5th and Thursday, September 6th, 2018 and facilitated workshops on metacognition. CET&L partnered with the Learning Commons and the Peer Education Network to offer workshops for faculty, advisors, staff, and students.

Workshops for Faculty, Advisors, Staff, and Students

Get Students to Focus on Learning Instead of Grades: Metacognition is the Key!

21st Century students come to college with widely varying academic skills, approaches to learning, and motivation levels. Faculty often lament that students are focused on achieving high grades, but are not willing to invest much time or effort in learning. This session focused on the importance of helping students acquire simple, but effective learning strategies based on cognitive science principles. Participants engaged in interactive reflection activities that allowed them to experience strategies that significantly improve learning while transforming student attitudes about the meaning of learning.

Metacognition: The Key to Acing Courses! (for students)

All students who are admitted to college have the ability to ace their courses.  However, most students did not acquire effective learning strategies in high school, and resort to memorizing information just before tests. This strategy usually yields poor results, with students earning grades much lower than their ability.  This interactive workshop introduced students to cognitive science based learning strategies that help all students experience meaningful, transferable learning, resulting in A’s in their courses!
