The Scholarship of Teaching & Learning Faculty Learning Community

2015_2016 SoTL Faculty Learning Community

2015-2016 Scholarship of Teaching Learning Faculty Learning Community

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Faculty Learning Community is a yearlong collaborative program of learning and reflection to help faculty develop knowledge and skills for SoTL research. A key component of this model is community building to create a supportive network of fellow researchers from across the university. In addition to participating in seminars and activities designed to build knowledge and research skills, faculty members create an individual or collaborative SoTL project over the course of the year, culminating in a high-quality final product. Examples of products include a SoTL-related literature review, grant proposal, study design, study with results, conference presentation, or draft manuscript.

The goals of the SoTL-FLC include:

  • Building and sustaining a network of UC faculty members at all career stages and across all academic disciplines and fields who will be leaders in conducting research to improve student learning;
  • Making more visible the excellent SoTL work already produced by faculty in a wide array of academic disciplines across UC;
  • Strengthening new SoTL research by facilitating peer review throughout the research process and providing new opportunities for faculty to collaborate in the production of SoTL research; and
  • Contributing to knowledge about teaching and learning through peer reviewed journal publications and professional presentations.

Members have significant voice in further shaping the program based on their own needs, skills, and goals.

What Past Participants are Saying

It can feel isolating to be the only one (or one of a few) faculty interested in SoTL in your home department, so just knowing that others are involved in discipline-based SoTL research is helpful.
Getting some practical discussion about ethics boards de-mystified the process for me.
Hearing about the projects of other faculty has opened my mind to new possibilities.
I learned a great deal participating in the SoTL-FLC. SoTL research does not seem as intimidating as it once did.
The suggestions of the other members have been especially valuable to me because I am new to the field. Their support and ideas have been amazing.
Be open-minded and you will gain a lot from the perspectives of people in other fields.
