Senior Vice Provost for Academic Planning
Professor of Art History, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
Within her role as Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Dr. Kristi Nelson is the Provost’s chief advisor and representative for academic affairs, strategic planning and partnerships with academic units and other internal and external partners. She is a key member of the Provost’s leadership team and represents the office across campus and to the Ohio Board of Regents.
Dr. Nelson has been a strong supporter of and advocate for the University Honors Program for many years. Her engagement with honors education at UC has included teaching honors seminars with study tours to Italy that have been incredibly well-received by students. Dr. Nelson is deeply committed to student learning and engagement. Her advocacy and vision were key to the development of the experientially-based, high-impact, deep-learning honors program that we have today.
Comments from student Michael Flanagan provide a window into Dr. Nelson’s teaching and impact:
“The Roman Experience was an amazing seminar because it taught me about the architecture and art that goes into icons like St. Peter's Basilica to compliment the engineering I already understand. Dr. Nelson did a great job introducing it to us here, then explaining in depth when we saw it in person, and now I look at my whole career differently.”
From November 2013 – December 2014, Dr. Nelson served as the Interim Dean of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. In 2012 she served as the on-site administrator for the College of Nursing. Dr. Nelson helped lead the creation of the UC’s AMP (Academic Master Plan), and chaired the Academic Committee (AC) for many years. She also served on the Fiscal Coordinating Committee (FCC) and the President’s Budget Advisory Committee (BC). She was instrumental in establishing a women’s leadership program at UC along with other women leaders on campus. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an undergraduate degree from Florida State University. Prior to joining the Provost’s Office she served as Associate Dean in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). Her specialty in Art History is in the area of Early Modern Dutch and Flemish Art.
We are exceptionally grateful for Dr. Nelson’s support and commitment to honors education at UC!
