Making Benefits and Retirement Elections

All benefits choices (except retirement) are made through Employee Self Service. You have 45 days from your date of hire to make your selections. In order to make a change after the 45-day period window, you must experience an IRS-approved Life Event. If you do not make your benefit elections within the 45-day window, you will be provided with UC's default benefit options.

If you do not make benefit elections via ESS in the timefram noted above the following default elections will apply:

  • Anthem PPO medical plan: employee only coverage
  • Anthem Basic Dental Plan: employee only coverage
  • LIfe Insurance: 1x annual base pay, maximum coverage of $50,000
  • No Long Term Disability Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance, Vision insurance or Flexible Spending Account enrollment.

Under the Retirement Benefits option on the left navigation bar selection New Hires/Candidates. On this page, you will find detailed information regarding your retirement plan options. New employees have 120 days from their hire date to make their selection in the Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP) rather than the state retirement  system (OPERS or STRS, as applicable). Your retirement plan election is made via a paper form. Once you make your retirement selection it is irrevocable.

We hope that these resources will allow you to Choose Well. You will receive an email from the Benefits team within 2 weeks of your start date.
