Malcolm Hewitt Wiener to be Awarded Honorary Doctorate from UC

Malcolm H. Wiener will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the University of Cincinnati Commencement Ceremony at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8, in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. Wiener is being honored for his world contributions to scholarship.

Malcolm H. Wiener is an Aegean prehistorian who has written extensively on the Eastern Mediterranean world in the Bronze Age. His topics include the emergence, florescence and collapse of the first complex societies of the western world in Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece, their relationship to the civilizations of the Near East and Egypt, and the chronology of the ancient world via comparisons of radiocarbon, tree-ring, ice-core and astronomical dates in relation to the ancient texts, inscriptions and stratigraphy of the artifacts. 

Wiener is the founder of the Institute for Aegean Prehistory (INSTAP). The foundation is now the largest in the world for funding this field of research and supports scholars in Europe, North America and the Pacific. Formed in 1982, INSTAP supports the exploration of the archeology of Europe’s earliest civilizations, the Minoan and Mycenaean, which arose in Greece and Crete between 3000 and 1000 B.C.

Wiener’s awards include the honorary doctorates of the Universities of Sheffield, Tübingen and Athens, and the Ring of Honour of the German Academy in Mainz. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy, the Austrian Academy and the Society of Antiquaries in London, a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, and holds a rank of Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France. He is a Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and serves on a number of Visiting Committees at other museums.

Mr. Wiener is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where he chaired an independent task force on “Non-lethal Technologies: Military Implications and Options” and wrote its report. He has published articles on economics, foreign affairs, antiquities law and Picasso, and has written a column for Newsday.

Mr. Wiener was born in Tsingtao, China, and is married to Carolyn Talbot Seely. They have four children. He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Law School, served as an Ensign/Lt. in the United States Navy, practiced as an attorney, and was the founder and CEO of related investment firms between 1971 and 1987.
