WLWT: Geology Department's Wise Discusses "Fracking"
Theres a whole lot of shaking going on in Youngstown lately, and the University of Cincinnatis Julia Wise says thats not good.
According to a recent news report by WLWT, a wastewater well near Youngstown is thought to be the source of numerous minor earthquakes in the area over the past two years.
Wise, a doctoral candidate in geology, appeared on WLWT news to give weatherman Erik Zarnitz information on the fracking process and its potential to cause earthquakes.
Hydraulic fracturing, called fracking," is an oil and gas extraction technique that produces contaminated wastewater as a byproduct. This water is then disposed of by pumping it underground into wastewater wells. Wise told Zarnitz that fracking contributes to the lubrication of fault lines, which can trigger earthquakes.
