UC ingot   Dear Alumni and Friends,

“Commitment to excellence” is a slogan I’ve adopted to inspire my term as head of the Department of Communication at the University of Cincinnati. After “googling” the phrase, I discovered that lots of companies, other organizations and even individuals have adopted “commitment to excellence” as a vision or goal to spur success in a variety of contexts.

What does “excellence” look like in an academic setting?

I see excellence every day in the department, from our fabulous staff (Corina Bizzarri, Lindsey Ovadia, Vesna Kocani) to our tremendously productive faculty to our students—more than 800 majors and 30 graduate students this year.

While in the process of writing this opening, Communication folks scored a number of outstanding achievements, including:

Senior Kaitlin Dauner (former winner of our Verderber Scholarship Award) was one of four UC students named to receive a Presidential Leadership Medal of Excellence.

Adjunct Professor Lisa Marie Luccioni was named 2011-12 “Professor of the Year” by the Order of Omega, a national leadership honor society for social fraternity men and sorority women on campus. Earlier in April, Luccioni was identified by the Princeton Review as one of the 300 “top college professors” in the country.

Assistant Professor Eric Jenkins was notified that one of his essays is to be published in the journal Critical Inquiry, an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal devoted to the best critical thought in the arts and humanities.

These three great accomplishments—all in one week! Every week is not as momentous, but these kinds of achievements happen on a regular basis around here.

As you read about other examples of excellence in this newsletter, I ask you to think about ways you can help the department—through supporting one of our scholarship funds or making a contribution to our Communication Forum fund that is used to support a variety of student and faculty activities, like the publication of this newsletter. Help us to fulfill our “commitment to excellence.”

Stephen Depoe
Professor and Head
Department of Communication
