UC Army and Air Force ROTC Cadets to Be Commissioned as Officers

The University of Cincinnati Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) will hold a commissioning ceremony at 10 a.m., Friday, June 8, in the Great Hall of Tangeman University Center (TUC).  The UC Air Force commissioning ceremony will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 10, in the Great Hall.

The ceremony is held for ROTC cadets who address the high standards to be appointed a second lieutenant, such as meeting the requirements of their degree program, their officer leadership training, medical qualifications and physical fitness.

At the commissioning, the new officers receive their first salute in recognition of the authority of their office as bestowed by the president of the United States.

The following ROTC Army cadets will be commissioned as second lieutenants at the June 8 ceremony:

Oluseye Akomolede

, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, will commission into the Corps of Engineers and earn his bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Cameron Bowling,

from Hilliard, Ohio, will serve as an infantry officer in Ft. Bliss, Texas. He is earning a bachelor’s degree in international relations.

Nathan Chiudioni,

from Willowick, Ohio, will commission as a Second Lieutenant of Military Intelligence into the Ohio Army National Guard. He is earning his master’s degree in history.

Ashley Fuqua,

from Batavia, Ohio, will commission as a Field Artillery Second Lieutenant. He has previously served two overseas tours with the U.S. Marine Corps. He is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Louis Gordon

, from Cincinnati, Ohio, will commission into the Transportation Corps with duty at Ft. Knox, Ky. He is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Daniel Hartoin

, from Hamilton, Ohio, is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the Carl H. Linder College of Business and is commissioning as a Transportation Second Lieutenant.

Anna Heister,

from Fairfield, Ohio, will commission as an Ordnance Second Lieutenant. She is graduating from UC with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

Aaron Hertenstein

, from Liberty Township, Ohio, will commission into the Transportation Corps with a first duty assignment to South Korea. He is earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Michael Kappa

, from Cincinnati, Ohio, will commission into the Ohio Army National Guard as a Transportation Officer. He is earning his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Tyler McFarland

, from Ottowa-Glandorf, Ohio, will commission as an Armor Second Lieutenant. He will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the Carl H. Lindner College of Business.

Rachel Mercier

, from Catonsville, Ohio, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the Lindner College of Business and commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps.

Kyle Miller

, from Fremont, Ohio, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and commission into the Ohio Army National Guard as an Engineer Officer.

Holly Minnich

, from Cincinnati, Ohio, will commission into the Ohio National Guard as an Engineer Officer. She is graduating from UC with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

James Ohlweiler,

from Mason, Ohio, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.  He will serve as an Engineer Officer in the Ohio Army National Guard.

Tracy Purtell,

from Cincinnati, Ohio, will graduate with a BSN from the College of Nursing. She will commission as a second lieutenant into the Medical Service Corps as a nurse.

Michael Rutherford,

from Columbus, Ohio, will commission as a second lieutenant of Field Artillery.  He will earn a bachelor’s degree in history from McMicken College of Arts and Science.

John Shipp,

from Saint Bernard, Ohio, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and will commission as a second lieutenant of Military Police.

Colin Trundle

, from Alexandria, Ky., will commission as a second lieutenant in the Army’s Chemical Corps. He is earning his bachelor’s degree in international relations.

The following Air Force ROTC cadets will be commissioned as second lieutenants at the June 10 ceremony:

James Basel,

of Toledo, Ohio, will be assigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base (AFB) in Ohio. Basel is earning a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

John Boylson

, of Cincinnati, Ohio, will be assigned to Vandenberg AFB, California. He is earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing.

Kory Cookson,

of Perrysburg, Ohio, will be assigned to Vance AFB, Oklahoma. He is earning a bachelor’s degree in business finance.

Hoang Dang

, of Beavercreek, Ohio, will be assigned to Keesler AFB, Mississippi. He is earning a bachelor’s degree in business information systems.

Heather Elefante

, of Loveland, Ohio, will be assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. She is earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

, of Tipp City, Ohio, will be assigned to Vance AFB, Oklahoma. He is earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

UC researchers develop new CPAP device

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati are developing a VortexPAP machine that takes advantage of vortex airflow technology. A preliminary clinical study with current CPAP users demonstrated that the VortexPAP can deliver the pressure levels that are used in the subjects’ CPAP therapy, but the mask is more comfortable to wear. It has a minimalistic design that is less intrusive and barely touches the patient’s face.
