UC CEAS Fire Science to Host 'Community Paramedicine Seminar' Oct. 11
The University of Cincinnatis College of Engineering and Applied Science (UC CEAS) Fire Science & Emergency Management Program is hosting the Community Paramedicine Seminar on October 11, 2014. Uniting both local and national fire and emergency professionals with one common goalto improve public safetythe two-part seminar is being held at the Maple Knoll Retirement Center in the Auditorium from 9 am- 3 pm.
Leaders, such as Buck McAlpin, Director of Government Affairs at North Memorial Hospital in St. Paul, MN and several other key representatives from local fire departments and hospitals, will lead this dynamic seminar focusing on emerging Community Paramedicine efforts.
Community Paramedicine is a supplement to the traditional emergency medical services (EMS) response model and bridges both community health service and EMS coverage gaps. Many different organizations and groups are working on projects to further explore and develop the concept of Community Paramedicine.
UC has partnered with three tri-state fire departments (FD)Cincinnati FD, Colerain Township FD, and Springfield Township FD and the Council on Aging of Southwest (SW) Ohio to further address Community Paramedicine as it develops here in Ohio. Cincinnati FD District Chief Cedric Robinson; Colerain Township FD Captain Will Mueller; Springfield Township FD Fire Chief Rob Leininger; UC School of Social Work Director James Clark, PhD; and Council on Aging of SW Ohio Program Manager Jeanne Wallman will explain their ongoing Community Paramedicine efforts.
Additionally, the Southwest Ohio Fire Chiefs Association is sponsoring a roundtable discussion on Community Paramedicine Opportunities, led by Hamilton County Fire Chief Leininger; Cincinnati Fire Chief Richard Braun; Butler County Fire Chief John Centers; Warren County Fire Chief Chris Eisele; and Clermont County Fire Chief Steve Kelly.
Keynote Speaker, State Senator Bill Seitz, will kick off the seminar, which highlights UCs continued commitment to aiding the aging population in maintaining in-home independence. UC is a long-time, partner of Maple Knoll Village and the two institutions recently unveiled the villages new Smart Innovation Collaboratory House. The Smart Innovation Collaboratory House is a high-tech residence developed in partnership with the UC College of Medicines geriatric experts and designed by the UC College of Nursing and CEAS to determine whether technology can close the primary care gap for an aging population.
Dr. Debi Sampsel, DNP, BA, RN, and Chief Officer Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the UC College of Nursing, and Dan Humpert, MSME, Director of the UC Center for Robotics Research and Associate Professor in the CEAS Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, will lead a discussion on how robots and other novel technologies are being utilized to assist the elderly in their homes. The afternoon discussion on Partnerships between Hospitals and Fire Service will be led by Buck McAlpin, Director of Government Affairs at North Memorial Hospital in St. Paul, MN. McAlpin will illustrate the successes hes had with implementing Community Paramedicine in his region.
Also in attendance will be representatives from Christ Hospital; Mercy West; METRO Life Flight; the Mobile Integrated Healthcare Ad Hoc Committee; North Memorial Hospital; the Ohio Board of Emergency Medical, Fire & Transportation Services; and TriHealth.
