The University of Cincinnati received the 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award, which recognizes colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. UC was also named a 2018 Diversity Champion by INSIGHT Into Diversity—one of only 10 universities named to both lists.
UC has earned the award annually since 2012, recognized among the top colleges and universities that "demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion." View Insight's 2018 list of top colleges for diversity.
The INSIGHT into Diversity's award is open to all colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. Their thorough application process “measures an institution’s level of achievement and intensity of commitment in regard to broadening diversity and inclusion on campus through initiatives, programs, and outreach; student recruitment, retention, and completion; and hiring practices for faculty and staff.”
Diversity champion institutions are selected from the top tier of award recipients.
"Known for visionary leadership,” Insight explains, “Diversity Champions are institutions that set the standard for thousands of other campus communities striving for diversity and inclusion." UC was also named a Diversity Champion in 2017.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for the work we are doing toward diversity, equity and inclusion. These efforts not only help the students but the broader community as we strive towards excellence,” says Whitney Gaskins, PhD, Assistant Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Community Engagement for the College of Engineering and Applied Science.
As the leader of this diversity office and a three-time graduate of UC (B.S., M.S. and Ph.D.), Gaskins strives to facilitate innovative and inclusive opportunities to provide a variety of pathways for student, faculty and staff success.
Her office's student-centered programs include Emerging Ethnic Engineers, the Dr. Edward N. Prather summer bridge scholars program, multiple scholarship programs and community-based STEAM events like family science academies and math and science help nights at local K-12 schools.
CEAS also established an equity and inclusion council two years ago and the college have made concerted efforts to increase representation in both student and faculty populations in terms of gender equity. In addition, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society recognized CEAS in the 2018-19 top 200 colleges for American Indian students.
According to its website, INSIGHT Into Diversity is “the oldest and largest diversity magazine and website in higher education today.
