Cincinnati Law professor elected to prestigious American Law Institute

Michael Solimine, Donald P. Klekamp Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, has been elected a member of the American Law Institute (ALI), the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize and otherwise improve the law. Solimine joins 40 other new members who will bring their perspective, insight, and expertise to the ongoing work of the Institute.

The ALI drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, Model Codes, and Principles of Law the influence courts and legislatures, as well as legal scholarship and education. ALI membership is based on processional achievement and demonstrated interest in improving the law.

“The election of new members is an important part of keeping the ALI fresh and strong. The collective wisdom of our diverse membership leads to the development of clear, knowable, practical, and generally applicable rules and doctrines in our publications, which have been trusted in the legal community for nearly 100 years,” said ALI President David F. Levi. “I am pleased to welcome this new group of practicing lawyers, academics, and state and federal judges, and look forward to their many contributions to the work of the ALI.”

Solimine, who joined the College of Law in 1987, teaches in the areas of civil procedure, federal courts, conflict of laws, and election law. He is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the leading scholars in the American civil litigation system. His scholarship has focused on, among other things, appellate litigation, empirical studies of various aspects of civil litigation in federal and state courts, and the doctrinal implications of the similarities and differences between the institutional structures of federal and state courts, and the decision making of judges on those courts.

Solimine is the author of five books and over seventy law review articles, book chapters, or book reviews. His work has been cited and discussed by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts of Ohio and Iowa, and other courts, and frequently by scholarly books, casebooks, and law review articles.

As a new member of ALI, Solimine joins his colleagues Sandra Sperino, Judge Joseph P. Kinneary Professor of Law; Verna L. Williams, Dean and Nippert Professor of Law (ex officio); Joseph P. Tomain, Dean Emeritus and Wilbert and Helen Ziegler Professor of Law; Jacob Cogan, Judge Joseph P.
