WVXU: Spotlight on 'The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia'

CCM alumni and faculty join Cincinnati Edition to discuss Rick Pender's new book

Cincinnati-based theater writer, critic and author Rick Pender recently released "The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia," which Broadway World listed in its "30 Theatre Books for Your Summer Reading List." As a Sondheim expert, Pender shares a detailed and comprehensive reference to one of musical theatre's most prolific and admired composers and lyricists.

WVXU's Cincinnati Edition recently featured the new book, including interviews with Pender, CCM Professor Vincent DeGeorge and alumni who have worked with Sondheim and performed his works — Pamela Myers (BFA Musical Theatre, '69) and Jessica Hendy (BFA Musical Theatre, '93). Sondheim gave Myers her "big break" on Broadway shortly after she graduated from CCM. Her first Broadway audition was for Sondheim's Company. She was cast as Marta in the musical's debut production and recieved the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

DeGeorge plans to direct Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George at CCM in spring 2022 (performance and ticket details will be announced in February 2022). CCM plans to announce its 2021-22 events bi-monthly. View the college's initial lineup of ticketed September and October performances.
