FOX19 NOW: Living closer to the city could contribute to 'heat island' effect

UC heat island expert explains how temperatures can be higher for city dwellers

Heat island researcher Pravin Bhiwapurkar, an associate professor in UC’s School of Architecture and Interior Design, was featured in a Fox19 weather segment about heat islands and how cities have higher temperatures than areas that are less building dense. 

Heat islands are urban area in which significantly more heat is absorbed and retained than in surrounding areas.  

“When buildings use air conditioners, they also dump a lot of heat outside,” says Bhiwapurkar, a nationally recongized researcher who investigates the intersection of urban climate change, urban morphology and urban building energy use.
