Body Acceptance Week Examines Image and Reality


Accept yourself the way you are. Better yet, celebrate the one and only you. The University of Cincinnati Wellness Center and the UC Women’s Center observe Body Acceptance Week April 15-17 with a series of presentations that examine body image and open discussions about how self destructive our self criticisms can be.

Tuesday, April 15
Noon, Max Kade German Cultural Center (Room 736, Old Chemistry)
Lecture: Challenging Size-ism in Our Society
Guest speaker Ellen Shuman is director of the Acoria Center and founder of A WEIGH OUT, a local program that provides information, counseling and coaching to people struggling with eating disorders. A free lunch will be provided.

Wednesday, April 16
Noon, Max Kade German Cultural Center
Lecture: Exploring the Myths Behind Diets
Cynthia Goody, assistant professor from the department of nutritional sciences, College of Allied Health Sciences, presents the lecture. Goody says Americans spend $30 billion annually on weight loss programs. This lecture reveals which dietary plans are based on sound and solid nutrition science, as well as the programs that are old gimmicks remarketed as new, revolutionary diets. A free lunch will be provided.

7 p.m., Event Pavilion
Lecture: The Beauty Myth
National speaker and author Naomi Wolf presents a lecture based on her best-selling book that challenged the cosmetics industry. A free dinner will be provided.

Thursday, April 17
Noon, African American Cultural and Research Center
Panel Discussion: Body Image Across Cultures
A panel of UC students and staff will discuss body image, based on personal experiences through their own cultures and communities.

Body Acceptance week is co-sponsored by MainStreet, the Diversity Education Programs, Students Educating About Eating Disorders (SEED) and Working on Wellness.
