Discussions to Explore Cincinnati's Past, Present and Future

Politicians, community leaders, columnists and celebrities will come together in May for a series of discussions titled, “Cincinnati Then, Now and in the Future: A Personal Perspective.” The events, presented by the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR), are free and open to the public and will be held at the Carmel Presbyterian Church at 3549 Reading Road in North Avondale.

Here is the schedule of events:

  • Friday, May 2
    2-3:30 p.m. Politics in Cincinnati – Former Cincinnati Mayor Dwight Tillery, former Cincinnati Mayor Arn Bortz and Cincinnati city council member David Pepper will share their personal views and experiences in Cincinnati politics. The session will be moderated by ILR members Herb Allen and Marcella Trice.
  • Friday, May 9
    2-3:30 p.m. A Woman’s Perspective – Sheila Adams, president of the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati; Kathy Jorgensen Finley, community relations manager for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; Edna Howell-Parrish, WAKW Christian radio personality; and CityBeat columnist Kathy Wilson share their opinions on Cincinnati’s past, present and future. The session will be moderated by ILR members Herb Allen and Marcella Trice.
  • Friday, May 16
    2-3:30 p.m. Religion and Education in Cincinnati – Carl Westmoreland, senior advisor for the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, will examine education in Cincinnati. The Right Reverend Herbert Thompson, Jr., Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio, and Rabbi Mark Goldman, senior rabbi of the Rockdale Temple, share their perspectives and personal stories about religion and Cincinnati. The session will be moderated by Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney, editor-in-chief of the Cincinnati Herald, and ILR member Herb Allen.

The University of Cincinnati Institute for Learning in Retirement provides noncredit courses for students aged 50 and older. Created in 1991, the institute was the first of its kind in Ohio and became a model for other universities.
