Two Area High Schools Win Awards at South s BEST Robotics Competition
Two of the four local high schools competing in the Souths BEST competition came home with awards.
Roger Bacon High School won the Bearcat BEST robotics competition (after coming in second in 2003). Loveland High School placed second in the robotics portion.

This year Kentucky was represented for the first time, through the participation of Georgetowns Scott County High School which won first place in the Bearcat BEST presentation competition. Ursuline Academy, in their second competition, took second place in presentation.
At the South's BEST in November 2004, the Scott County High School team won second place in Best T-shirt Design. This special award is given for the most original game-specific team t-shirt design.

Ursuline Academys team won second place in the Founders Award for Creative Design. Their award was given to the team that makes the best use of the engineering process in consideration of offensive and defensive capabilities in machine design. (It was awarded in recognition of BEST founders Steve Marum and Ted Mahler.)

Combat robots like UC's Maximizer will again be fighting for first place in the National Havoc Robot League (NHRL) competition, slated for April 20.
UC researchers develop new CPAP device

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati are developing a VortexPAP machine that takes advantage of vortex airflow technology. A preliminary clinical study with current CPAP users demonstrated that the VortexPAP can deliver the pressure levels that are used in the subjects’ CPAP therapy, but the mask is more comfortable to wear. It has a minimalistic design that is less intrusive and barely touches the patient’s face.
UC architectural engineering alumna inspires high school students

University of Cincinnati alumna Emma Wilhelmus fell in love with engineering when she was in ninth grade. After taking drafting, architecture and engineering courses in high school, she set out to major in architectural engineering in college. Now, she is an engineering teacher at a local high school and hopes to inspire students.
