UC Encouraged to Support Walk As One Event

The following information comes from a letter issued by Senior Vice President & Provost for Health Affairs Jane Henney, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Mitchel Livingston and Senior Vice President & Provost for Baccalaureate and Graduate Education Anthony Perzigian:

The University of Cincinnati is joining with the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) to take part in Walk As One scheduled for Saturday, October 15th. The NCCJ is a human relations organization dedicated to fighting racism in the United States by promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions, and cultures. The event raised over $280,000 last year supporting important programs of NCCJ and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Several weeks ago you received a letter from President Zimpher inviting you to join with the NCCJ to take part in this event. As co-chairs of the Just Community Steering Committee, we encourage your participation. We believe NCCJ's Walk As One aligns with the UC|21 goals and is a tangible way to show your support and accept responsibility for a more caring and inclusive community at UC and in Cincinnati. All VPs and Deans have been asked to designate captains to build teams from their respective areas.

Last year, UC received the award as the top fund raising school team. This marks our fifth year of participation and we’re excited that this year’s Walk will commence from the Freedom Center at 10:00 AM. Bus transportation will be provided to and from campus. Buses will begin transporting walkers at 8:15 AM from the Dabney Circle to downtown and the last bus will return from the Freedom Center at 2:00 PM. UC has consistently won the prize for the most walkers from an educational institution. Please come out and help us claim this award one more time. Please encourage members of your department to volunteer for the Walk As One 10K Run. If you have any questions about the Walk, please contact Deborah Weinstein, Director of Business Affairs, Division of Student Affairs and Services, at 556-4194 or by e-mail at Deborah.Weinstein@uc.edu.

More information about Walk As One and NCCJ programs may be found at the UC Just Community website: www.uc.edu/justcommunity. The Walk As One sign-up form can be accessed at this website as well. We encourage you and members of your department to do your part to make the University and Cincinnati a better place for everyone.
