Longtime University Relations Mastermind Greg Hand to Be Honored at UC's Commencement

There is a common thread among the many and varied roles in which Greg Hand served during his 36-year career at the University of Cincinnati – a thread of excellence.

In honor of such remarkable commitment to his alma mater, Hand – historian, communicator and champion of the university's reputation – will be given the President's Award for Excellence during UC's Fall Commencement ceremony Dec. 13.

The President's Award for Excellence is one of UC's highest honors. The special recognition, given by UC President Santa J. Ono, will be bestowed upon Hand during Commencement events held from Dec. 12-13 in Fifth Third Arena. The Doctoral Hooding and Master’s Recognition Ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 12, and the Undergraduate Commencement (bachelor and associate degrees) will be at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 13.

Hand retired in 2014 as associate vice president for public relations at the University of Cincinnati. He was associated with the university since 1978 in various capacities, including editor of the faculty/staff newspaper, science writer, news bureau manager, university spokesperson and public relations instructor. He is a 1974 graduate of the university's McMicken College of Arts & Sciences.

Before his employment by the University of Cincinnati, Hand was a reporter and editor for several weekly newspapers, including the Western Hills Press in Cincinnati. He is co-author, with Kevin Grace, of "The University of Cincinnati, a pictorial history of the university," and "Bearcats! The Story of Basketball at the University of Cincinnati." He is currently editing a book for the university's bicentennial in 2019.
