uc education & research center (erc)

Established after the Occupational Health and Safety Act was passed in 1970 to protect employees from workplace hazards, the UC Education & Research Center (ERC) opened in order to train practicing professionals, as well as graduate students, to be experts in worker health and safety. The UC ERC is one of 18 centers across the country dedicated to providing interdisciplinary education to promote workplace health and safety.

The ERC provides courses in biological monitoring, environmental and occupational hygiene, hazardous substances academic training, occupational health and medicine, nursing, occupational safety and health engineering and numerous Continuing Education courses, designed to increase the expertise of practicing professionals in workplace safety.

The awareness of such topics will increase as elements of face-to-face courses offered by the UC ERC will soon be available online. Professor Andrew Maier said the ERC is developing content using three approaches: online lectures, self-study modules and videos.

“We’re trying to put together a package of approaches,” Maier said.

While the ERC works to leverage all this technology together to increase their reach, they are also working with the Center for Excellence in eLearning to fully harness the tools available at UC. Maier said he plans to get help with new video technologies, including a light board that will be used to produce short technical videos on targeted topics. UC ERC professors have also received training in Articulate Storyline, a software used to create computer learning modules.

“It’s been a real strength to have that expertise,” Maier said. “We work with the eLearning Technology group on what’s the best way to reach an audience of users.”

With a steady offering of online material, the UC ERC will have a greater and more diverse reach, making Continuing Education courses more accessible to professionals across the nation, and the world, in varying stages of their careers.
