A blueberry a day…

Is there anything Blueberries can’t do? Already deemed a superfood for their health giving properties, a new study’s found that they can also help prevent Alzheimer’s. (Oh yeah, and they taste delicious too.)

Scientist from the University of Cincinnati Academi Health Centre believe that the blue hued fruit could tackle the brain disease. This is due to a flavoid that blueberries have called anthoncyanain which has shown to improve brain cognition in animals. The scientist's built upon this information by using a human study, and the results found that the same benefits occurred in people.

The study was conducted with 47 adults aged 68+ who had mild cognitive impairment. Half of the group was given freeze-dried blueberry powder (equal to one cup of blueberries) while the other half were given a placebo powder. After 16 weeks the group who had the blueberry powder had significant improvement in cognitive performance and brain function.

"There was improvement in cognitive performance and brain function in those who had the blueberry powder compared with those who took the placebo.

"The blueberry group demonstrated improved memory and improved access to words and concepts," said lead researcher Robert Krikorian, from the University of Cincinnati in the US
