UC’s Department of Journalism came together in Charles P. Taft Research Center last month to honor the 2025 hall of fame and young alumni award recipients. This year, the ceremony honored four hall of fame and five young alumni inductees. Among the hall of fame award winners were David Altman (1968, 1974), Glenn Gamboa (1989), Tony Cook (2003), and Kristy Conlin (2009). The Young Alumni recognized included Carly Hagedon (2011), Eamon Queeney (2011), Keith BieryGolick (2013), Bethany Cianciolo (2013), and Jason Hoffman (2013).

When Monica Salatin finished her undergraduate program in media studies at CUNY Hunter, Macaulay Honors College, she knew she wanted to deepen her education in communications. So, when she received a full scholarship to study at UC’s Master of Communications program, she took the opportunity. While at UC, Salatin took advantage of the experiences the college had to offer, including conducting research, and a position with the marketing and communications office for the College of Arts and Sciences. These opportunities provided her with the hands-on experience she wanted, setting her up for her career.

As a young girl, Hajra Munir, a second-year law and society major, had a passion for writing. “I was always writing,” Munir said. “Whether it was in a journal, writing stories or writing poetry.” But Munir wasn’t sure how she could use her writing skills beyond her love for it, until she watched her brother join the student newspaper at Walnut Hills High School and decided to join him. Since then, journalism has become an integral part of her life. “I started news writing, and I absolutely loved it,” Munir said. “I felt like I could be who I wanted to be, and I felt like this is what I want to do, this is what I love. Journalism has made me such a more confident person, and I wouldn’t be where I am without writing, without starting my love for journalism.” Now, going into her third year at UC, Munir will serve as The News Record’s (TNR) next editor-in-chief for the 2025-2026 school year. TNR is UC’s student run news organization, where students themselves have opportunities to report on an array of topics, from breaking campus news to entertainment and lifestyle.

When Aaliyah Mann traveled to the Amazon to study abroad, she didn’t know what to expect. When she returned, she had a whole new perspective on how we, as a country, can try to help ourselves. Environmental challenges are becoming increasingly common. Roadblocks like deforestation and air pollution severely impact our world, and its future health, and the world is starting to take notice. In the summer of 2024, a Northern California wildfire forced hundreds to evacuate while parts of Florida were still reeling from severe flooding, as reported by NBC News. The world needs more people focused on lessening the effects of these issues, and the University of Cincinnati’s Environmental Studies program students seek to do just that.

Associate professor of anthropology Stephanie Sadre-Orafai has been appointed the new director of the Taft Research Center at the University of Cincinnati. Sadre-Orafai, who also holds affiliations with the department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and The Cincinnati Project, begins her five-year term in fall semester of 2024.
