During her time as a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati, Devika Chauhan, PhD played a vital role in elevating UC's cutting-edge research on carbon nanotube synthesis and its state-of-the-art applications. Now employed by Intel, she applies the knowledge from her graduate experience at UC to develop future artificial intelligence (AI) chips.

University of Cincinnati engineering students have partnered with a local sustainability organization, Faith Communities Go Green, to improve energy efficiency in a Cincinnati church. Civil and architectural engineering students are using the data gathered from an energy audit to transform energy use in the church. This project is funded by ASHRAE, a global society of heating, refrigerating, and air-conditioning engineers.

The University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science established the Undergraduate Research Fellowship Co-op Program to expand opportunities for students to engage in meaningful research in labs. Most students spend five semesters working in industry through the cooperative education (co-op) program, but students can also choose research positions in corporate, university, or government labs. Many students opt for a research co-op if they are considering a career in research or plan to attend graduate or medical school.

At the University of Cincinnati, innovation is a pillar of education, something that drew doctoral candidate Yuxin Wang to continue her studies here. Under the guidance of Professor Donglu Shi, Wang is researching how nanomaterials can be used in medical drug delivery and diagnostics to improve health care outcomes. She was recently named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

From a young age, Gracie Hill was inspired by her father's career in the construction field. He earned his degree from the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science and she wanted to do the same. Now at UC she has developed a website that aims to recruit, retain and promote the success of women in the construction industry. She works under the guidance of Emeritus Professor George Suckarieh.

The Dr. Edward N. Prather Summer Bridge Program was created more than 30 years ago at the University of Cincinnati to ensure academic preparedness for historically excluded students pursuing degrees in science and engineering. The program takes place over a six-week period during the summer before students enter college. Prior to the kickoff of their first year at UC, bridge students lives in on-campus dorms and take courses to prepare them for the College of Engineering and Applied Science curriculum.

Panagiotis (Peter) Smirniotis has been at the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science since 1994. He is known for impactful, interdisciplinary research focusing on various environmental and energy problems. Recently, he was honored with the inaugural David F. Ollis Award for lifelong achievements from the International Scientific Society of Semiconductor Photocatalysis and Solar Energy Conversion. The award is named after the influential professor and pioneer in the field.

Inspired by the desire to improve and advance the world of artificial intelligence, Nkechi Jennifer Akinwale has taken advantage of every available opportunity at the University of Cincinnati. Along with a dedication to her field, Akinwale has a deep-rooted dedication to the mentorship of young girls in STEM. She has mentored numerous undergraduate and K-12 students in various programs to share her knowledge and experience as a PhD student. Recently, she was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Katelin “Katie” Weitzel was first drawn to the University of Cincinnati by the esteemed College of Engineering and Applied Science, but her decision was solidified by the groundbreaking work of Dr. Dionysios Dionysiou in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering. Weitzel’s interest in water treatment came from growing up in Michigan and witnessing firsthand the impact of a water crisis. During her time at UC she has been awarded the Rindsberg Fellowship, a Graduate Student Award in Environmental Chemistry, and recently was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by CEAS.
