Kara Mealy was a 21-year-old UC co-op when she stepped off the subway directly under the World Trade Center on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, placing her at ground zero but in the dark about what was happening overhead.

Co-ops graduated a little early that wartime spring of 1942 -- on April 10 to be exact. Recalled Florence Schroeder: The boys wore their ROTC uniforms under their caps and gowns and left immediately for the service from commencement. By April 20, I was on the job not as a secretary but as a statistical accountant. The employers hired us for men s positions. They even gave us girls golf lessons.

That s because he s working an extended cooperative-education quarter with a small Utah design firm facing a mammoth challenge: creating all the city, stadium and airport graphics (banners, kiosks, murals) for the February 2005 Super Bowl.

Take note: Freshman from the University of Cincinnati are banding together in small groups so they can turn cast-off ovens, refrigerators and dishwashers into musical instruments. Then, they ll provide a free concert of original compositions at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, in Auditorium 4400 of the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

Adam Sickmiller, 23, of Napoleon, Ohio, is one of three UC students taking advantage of a program linking UC's graduate planning program and the Peace Corps. With one year of his graduate program under his belt, Adam -- and his wife, Danielle -- are currently living and working in Macedonia.
