UC College-Conservatory of Music Interim Dean Jonathan Kregor has announced the addition of Chaz Wolcott to the college’s roster of distinguished performing and media arts faculty members. An accomplished director, choreographer, actor and educator, Wolcott’s appointment as Assistant Professor-Educator of Musical Theatre begins on Aug. 15, 2023.

This semester's Thinking About Music Lecture Series concludes at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 14, with a presentation by Ellie Hisama, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Music and Professor of Music from the University of Toronto. The title of Hisama's talk is "The Fragment and the Long Song of Julius Eastman." This lecture will be presented via Zoom. The talk is open to the entire UC community, but registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the Zoom meeting.

CityBeat recently published its annual Best of Cincinnati® issue, and several CCM programs and performances were recognized in this year's roundup. CityBeat staff awarded CCM "Best Musical Hat Trick" for the combined accomplishments of the musicals "Sunday in the Park with George," "She Loves Me" and "Something Rotten!" CCM's Media Production Division also gained a coveted spot in this year's list of Cincinnati's best sports and recreations offerings, receiving the "Best Student Program With Actual National Exposure" award for the division's innovative Sports Media Production curriculum.

Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) are pleased to announce the next events in their joint program, Opera Fusion: New Works. The two new operas—Robeson by Scott Davenport Richards and David Cote and The Righteous by Gregory Spears and Tracy K. Smith—will receive workshops this April and May, and the public is invited to attend a sneak peek.

Each semester, CCM welcomes distinguished experts for a series of musical discussions and lectures that are open to the general public and free to attend. This semester's Joseph and Frances Jones Poetker Thinking About Music Lecture Series continues at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31, with a presentation by Psyche Loui, PhD, an Associate Professor from Northeastern University College of Arts, Media and Design. The title of Loui's talk is "Generating New Predictions: New Directions in Music for Brain Health." The lecture will be presented in the Baur Room of CCM's Corbett Center for the Performing Arts.

The boisterous notes of New Orleans’ opulent Mardi Gras will fill the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's Harriet Tubman Theater during a concert featuring UC College-Conservatory of Music students and faculty beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3. A companion to the Freedom Center’s Black History Month programming, this off-campus New Orleans Mardi Gras Concert is a celebration of music and culture featuring New Orleans-based jazz trumpeter Ashlin Parker and the CCM Jazz Orchestra. Directed by CCM Director of Jazz Studies Scott Belck, DMA, the Saturday night concert promises an evening with all the revelry and flair of Mardi Gras, followed by a reception and meet-and-greet with the Ashlin Parker.

The UC College-Conservatory of Music’s Spring 2023 Concert Series continues this week with performances by some of the college’s premier ensembles. The CCM Wind Symphony, CCM Philharmonia and CCM Jazz Orchestra return to the stage of Corbett Auditorium this week.

The UC College-Conservatory of Music opens its Spring 2023 ticketed concert series at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, with a performance by the CCM Steel Drum Band. Experience a musical trip to Trinidad and back in Corbett Auditorium during this popular annual concert. The CCM Steel Drum Band is an ensemble made up of percussion majors under the direction of Professor Russell Burge. The band focuses on the traditional music of Trinidad but also incorporates pop, folk and reggae. Improvisation has become a key element of the band's repertoire. The Steel Band gives one annual program each spring at CCM, as well as several outdoor concerts in the Cincinnati area.

Applications for the inaugural Nina Simone Piano Competition for African American Pianists are now open. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2023, and applications can be accessed online. Taking place in the summer of 2023, this bi-annual competition is specifically for talented young African American pianists.
