UC chemistry alumna gives back to community

UC alum Ann Villalobos was undecided about joining the university’s PhD program in chemistry in 1985. She had graduated from the University of the Philippines—her home country—and gone on to the Tokyo Institute of Technology. She was looking for her next academic step when UC came onto her radar. Moving a world away to Cincinnati to further her education took some convincing for Villalobos. But she was intrigued by what the program had to offer. “I applied to the PhD program at the department of chemistry because the professors collaborate with each other to have a more meaningful, integrated research,” she said. After application, she was accepted. But she wasn’t totally convinced quite yet.

Election results show potential of prediction markets, blockchain

A prediction market was more accurate in forecasting the 2024 presidential election than traditional polls and pundits. The potential displayed by that success in forecasting the election, along with an administration friendlier to cryptocurrencies, could lead to greater adoption for them, a University of Cincinnati economist said. Michael Jones, PhD, a Carl H. Lindner College of Business assistant professor of economics and director of the Cryptoeconomics Lab at UC Digital Futures, said the success of a blockchain-based prediction market, Polymarket, in predicting the outcome of the election showed that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies have more potential than just investments.

The University of Cincinnati's well-regarded aerospace engineering program was an easy choice for his college studies. He was recently honored with the Herman Schneider Distinguished Alumni Award.
