GE Aerospace expands Next Engineers program for Cincinnati youth

GE Aerospace Foundation is investing further in its Next Engineers program, including the Cincinnati location facilitated by the University of Cincinnati, extending the program locally through 2028. Engineering Academy, a three-year engineering education program for high-schoolers, graduated its first cohort of students. Students who complete the program and go on to pursue an engineering degree in college will receive a scholarship.

In Memoriam: Dion Dionysiou, PhD

Dionysios (Dion) Dionysiou, PhD, professor of environmental engineering in the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, died unexpectedly Nov. 20. He was 57 years old. He was a world-renowned researcher, who was frequently lauded for his work developing technologies and strategies to identify, monitor, and treat water pollutants and toxins.

‘Everything is made out of something’

Ashley Paz y Puente is an assistant professor of materials engineering at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science. Supported by the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER grant she was awarded in 2022, Paz y Puente is researching how to create stronger and lighter weight materials that could be applied to almost everything we use in our daily lives. She is seeking to better understand the Kirkendall effect in the process of diffusion.

Trailblazing engineering professor honored with alumni award

Professor Awatef Hamed is a trailblazer. She came of age during a time when few women were going to college to study engineering. In 1968, she left her home in Egypt and came to the University of Cincinnati as the only female graduate student in the aerospace engineering program. She went on to get her master’s and doctoral degrees from UC and then was hired as a faculty member, where she was the only female faculty member for two decades. In 2001, she became the first woman to head a college aerospace engineering department.

Engineering alumnus presented with lifetime achievement award

Michael Valentine’s career as an innovator and entrepreneur has spanned more than four decades, and has included the creation of an industry-changing radar detector and two successful companies, Cincinnati Microwave, and his current business, Valentine Research. Through the years, Mike and his wife, Peg — both UC alumni — have become prodigious philanthropists at the University of Cincinnati and within the region, giving of their time and treasure to many causes close to their hearts.

Alumnus honored for impact on construction, real estate fields

January 17, 2023

Chris Dobrozsi was presented the Engineering Technology Award of Distinction from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science. He graduated from UC with an architectural engineering technology degree in 1989. He is now executive vice president of development at Neyer Properties and a city council member in Montgomery, Ohio, where he has made an indelible impact on the construction and real estate industries.

UC engineering dean celebrated with Women Who Mean Business Award

The Cincinnati Business Courier has honored University of Cincinnati’s Whitney Gaskins with the Women Who Mean Business Award. The program highlights the accomplishments of women in Greater Cincinnati who have made a significant impact in the business community in the past year. She is assistant dean of Inclusive Excellence and Community Engagement and a faculty member at the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Nineteen faculty join College of Engineering and Applied Science in 2022

The University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science continues to expand with the addition of nineteen new faculty members in 2022. Two professors were announced in January. Seventeen faculty members joined CEAS at the start of the fall semester, including two new department heads: Ying Sun, head of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, and Justin Zhan, head of the newly established Department of Computer Science.
