Lisa Vinciguerra is one UC student who plans to show off campus and spend some quality time with her younger sister May 3-4. Lisa, a second-year chemical engineering major, and her 13-year-old sister Janna will be taking part in campus tours and scavenger hunts as well as playing games like tug of war and a water balloon toss, as they attend Li'l Sibs and Kids Weekend, sponsored by the UC Student Alumni Council.
Lisa is Student Alumni Council coordinator for the event, billed as the Bearcat All-Stars weekend. "The idea of Li'l Sibs Weekend is to start that UC pride when children are little, plus it builds pride in UC students, because they're showing off campus to their little siblings."
There's no surprise as to why both Lisa and little sister Janna have pride in UC. After all, if their parents had attended other universities, the girls would never have been born. Their parents met at UC and fell in love. Their mom is a native of Mason, Ohio and dad resettled in Cincinnati from Pittsburgh. Their mother, Joan, is a graduate from the UC College of Nursing and works for the Cincinnati Health Department. Lisa's following in the footsteps of her dad, Tom, who majored in chemical engineering and works at Aventis Pharmaceuticals.
"I definitely heard a lot of dorm stories while I was growing up," says Lisa. "Dad lived in Sander Hall (the residence hall that was imploded in 1991), and my Mom lived in Daniels Hall. I lived in Daniels Hall my first year here, too."
Lisa, a graduate of McAuley High School, recalls a lot of family nights at UC basketball games. But despite the warm memories of her parents and the competitive spirit of the Bearcats, it was UC's co-op program in engineering that made the university her No. 1 choice. "The co-op program in engineering was probably the deciding factor. I did my co-op at GE Aircraft. It was awesome."
Lisa's sister Janna will be entering McAuley next year, but Lisa says Janna has looked over some of UC's programs to see if they fit her interests. Until it's time for college, Li'l Sibs Weekend will reach out to the interests of youngsters aged 4-14, providing college memories for siblings who are still looking ahead to high school graduation.
