Creating an Inclusive Classroom Environment: Brief

Sometimes classroom environments are made unwelcoming by the unintentional actions of instructors or students. If we are aware of two concepts, we can make our classrooms more inclusive.

  • Microaggressions
    • Definition: Brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, ornegative messages and insults toward minority groups or individual minority group members.
    • By being familiar with microaggressions, you can avoid them. You can make your classroom a more welcoming place for all students. Tools for interrupting microaggressions can be found here
    • Taxonomy of microaggressions here

    • The Microaggressions Project: This entire site is devoted to showing how microaggressions “create and enforce uncomfortable, violent and unsafe realities onto peoples’ workplace, home, school, childhood/adolescence/adulthood, and public transportation/space environments.”
