Safe Environment and Wellness Resources
The university offers resources and conducts practices to support health and wellness and to promote safety, effectiveness and efficiency throughout campus.
During the remote learning period, UC Housekeeping took the opportunity to clean and sanitize every building using cleaning agents approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for killing the SARS CoV-2 virus.
Items and areas cleaned included furniture (chairs, tables, desks, etc.), door handles and plates, light switches, elevator buttons, accessibility buttons and plates, vending machine buttons, ledges and handrails, windowsills and trash/recycle cans as well as all carpets vacuumed.
All restrooms were power washed and sanitized throughout, including every handle, counter, sink, partition, door, floor, etc.
UC Housekeepers will continue to clean high-traffic areas and commonly used touch points daily, such as restrooms, elevators, stairwell railings, lobbies, and classrooms. Our Housekeepers will sweep and vacuum non-common area floors once every other week.
UC Housekeeping will also install additional hand sanitizer stations throughout campus, located at building entrances and elevator lobbies.
How you can help
All employees can help to continue to maintain community health since in partnership with our UC Housekeepers. We ask that all employees coming to campus:
- Conduct daily cleaning and dusting in your personal workspaces, including office spaces, labs and conference rooms. Facilities Management will deliver an initial cleaning kit to all 370 mail locations.
- Because of the added workload on Housekeepers, please empty your office trash cans / recycle containers into larger bins to be placed on each floor. Our custodians will then regularly empty these larger containers.
What happens to a space if an on-campus member in that space contracts COVID-19?
UC's Environmental Health and Safety will assess the space and determine a safe and effective course of action. Any cleaning and sanitization of that space would be based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Good Health Practices
The same precautions that will protect you from the common cold and the flu will protect you from COVID-19:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, or touching your face. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
- Cover coughs/sneezes with your arm or a tissue.
- Avoid exposure to others who are sick.
- Stay home you are ill (except to visit a health care professional) and avoid close contact with others.
- Get adequate sleep and eat well-balanced meals to ensure a healthy immune system.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Breaks for Meals
When employees take breaks for meals while at work, we recognize that there may be limited places to sit, relax and enjoy the break/meal. Taking breaks for meals by necessityinvolves removing a mask/face-covering, and this may pose a risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 while eating. To minimize the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from asymptomatic individuals, any of the following options should be implemented, and should be discussed with managers.
- Employees should take breaks and meals in staggered shifts, as organized by their team/unitmanagers.
- Seating in break rooms should maintain at least a six-foot distance between individuals.
- Employees should avoid prolonged breaks/meals (15 minutes or more) without a facial covering in break rooms/lunch areas.
Professional Development and Well Being
- The Staff Success Center and Faculty Enrichment Center are offering professional development opportunities as well as offerings related to social and personal well being.
- The Division of Equity, Inclusion & Community Impact is offering a variety of online educational and wellness offerings, including anti-harassment and non-discrimination trainings as well as workshops on self care during isolation.
More Support Offerings
- Healthy UC is the university’s well-being collaborative. A variety of resources and programming are listed on Healthy UC’s Events page available to all students, faculty and staff.
- The Employee Assistance Program has offerings for benefits-eligible employees and family members that includes confidential tele-counseling 24/7 every day of the year. Offerings also include options for face-to-face and online counseling as well as webinars and minfulness coaching.
- Students can access a variety of health and wellness options.
- Be Well UC has frequent offerings to support the physical and mental well being of the university community, including individualized health coaching,
- Telework tips for employers and managers.
- The Campus Recreation Center is offering online workouts that are designed for at-home participation in your own space and requiring little ot no equipment.
