This project focuses on two Mughal pleasure garden sites, the Mehtab Bagh across the river from the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Nagaur Fort in Rajasthan. The purpose of these studies is to learm more about the refinements of Mughal garden construction and horticulture. Of special interest is how the gardens were organized and how they functioned as a reflection of courtly life in the 16th century. Plant macroremains and microremains are being analyzed to aid in the effort of reconstructing these beautiful medieval gardens about which so little is currently known.

Project commenced on November 1, 1996
