This symposium was co-organized by the Sainsbury Institute for the Studies of Japanese Arts and Cultures (SISJAC) and myself while I was the Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute. The panelists included scholars from England, Japan (Prof. Himeno Jun'ichi of Nagasaki University and Prof. Naoyuki Kinoshita of Tokyo University), and Australia. SISJAC is headquartered in Norwich, England, and London on the University of London campus. The preceedings of the symposium was later published by Hotei Publishing in 2004 as Reflecting Truth: Japanese Photography in the Nineteenth Century, co-edited by Dr. Nicole Cooledge Rousmaniere and myself.

Project commenced on January 1, 2002
