"Creation Science vs. Evolution" Mock Trial in the Otto M. Budig Theater, Scripps Howard Center, Chase College of Law.

Should those who challenge evolution have a voice in public school classrooms? That public policy question will be examined in a mock trial format using a fictional case in which a high school biology teacher from 'Chandler County, Kentucky' is fired for including instruction on creation science along with instruction about evolution. Kentucky has fairly strict guidelines that suggest evolution-only instruction, but the state also has a pro-Genesis statute. So the legalities of the issue aren't black and white. And, of course, the question isn't confined to our state. It is playing out again in the national political debate – as it so often does – and is heating up in a number of states. The mock trial at NKU will feature two well-known local attorneys, Phil Taliaferro versus Margo Grubbs, in a trial presided over by retired Kenton County Circuit Court Judge Doug Stephens. An expert witness will testify for each side. The role of the teacher will be played by Kenton County schoolteacher Heather Mastin and the role of the Chandler County Superintendent will be played by retired Boone County Superintendent Bryan Blavatt. The trial itself will start at 7 p.m. and last 90 minutes, after which the audience will decide the case. The trial is an effort to encourage an insightful, civil dialogue around a polarizing topic. We invite you to come watch, and participate.
