A university-wide partnership, led by the Data Center Task Force, is working to reinforce the Data Center’s back-up power supplies by connecting it to the CARE/Crawley building’s generator. This will ensure that IT systems and services remain operational in the event of an unexpected power outage.

Electrical contractors will connect the new lines from the CARE/Crawley generator to the Data Center’s power infrastructure from Dec. 28-29. In order to complete this final phase of the project, all systems and devices housed in the Data Center will be shut down for approximately 20-22 hours.

Major systems affected by this outage will include:

  • All “uc.edu” websites
  • Blackboard
  • UC Flex (financial/HR system)
  • UniverSIS (student information system)
  • Central Login System (identity management system)
  • Data Warehouse
  • Microsoft Lync (instant messaging and conferencing tool)
  • Microsoft SharePoint
  • UC Virtual Private Network (VPN)
  • UC FileSpace
  • All centrally managed file and print services (all servers housed in the Data Center)

Student, faculty and staff email systems will not be affected by the outage.

The estimated timeline for completion is as follows:

8 p.m., Sat., Dec. 28

  • Data Center staff will begin shutting down all systems.

12 a.m., Sun., Dec. 29

  • All equipment in the Data Center will be powered down.
  • Electricians will begin their work, which is expected to take 8-12 hours.

12 p.m., Sun., Dec. 29

  • Electricians finish their work.
  • Data Center staff notify network, storage and server administrators of completion.
  • Personnel begin bringing Data Center systems and services back online.

6 p.m., Sun., Dec. 29

  • All systems and services restored.

UC Information Technologies is committed to effectively preparing the university community for this outage. If you have any questions or concerns about the Data Center outage, please contact Don Rainwater at Don.Rainwater@uc.edu or 556-9020.
