Canopy Is the New Name of UC s eLearning Ecosystem

Congratulations to Natalie Miano, first-year veterinary technology major at UC Blue Ash, and Bill Boyle, adjunct assistant professor and studio/lab manager for Electronic Media Communications at UC Blue Ash, for creating the winning name of the University of Cincinnati's eLearning ecosystem!

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost Beverly Davenport joined Vice President for Information Technology and CIO Nelson Vincent to honor Miano, Boyle and the other participants whose submissions made it to the naming contest’s top five, at the

Connecting the Dots

event Thursday, March 27.

“Each and every member of our UC community is a part of this ecosystem and plays a key role in its success,” Provost Davenport said. “Together, this network of expertise, partnerships and systems make the Canopy innovative, collaborative and student-centric.”

At the event, members of the UC community gathered together to celebrate Canopy by discovering some of the

hottest trends

in eLearning at UC.

So, what does Canopy even mean, and how does it tie in with UC’s eLearning ecosystem?

Bearcats (binturongs) live in the tropical and sub-tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia. Clever, agile and resourceful, they thrive under the thick tree cover of the forest canopy. In UC’s Canopy, Bearcats also thrive. From tools and technologies to our expert faculty and staff, UC Bearcats have all of the eLearning resources they need at their fingertips.

The

Connecting the Dots

event showcased some of Canopy’s resources, and members of the UC community got a first-hand look at the innovative, collaborative and student-centric eLearning tools, technologies and exemplars that exist across campus. This list included Blackboard, Kaltura, iPads in Education and Interactive Case Studies from College of Nursing, Instructional Design and Content from College of Medicine, MOOCs, the UCIT Office of Information Security, the UC App Lab on Main, the Center for Simulations and Virtual Environments, Quality Matters, the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CET&L), Cincinnati Smart and the IT Governance eLearning Committee.

Guests walked away with a better understanding of what Canopy is, what resources are available to them, how to utilize these resources in the future and where exactly they fit into this eLearning ecosystem.

“As the Canopy continues to grow and evolve,” Vincent said, “more components will be added to its branches. Right now, the first major addition to Canopy is the upgraded Blackboard site, which will serve as the hub for all things eLearning at UC.”
