What the SUTVA?! Strategies for Rendering Effective Interpretations of Highly-Technical Content

Through participation in this workshop, attendees will discuss and acquire strategies for preparing for highly-technical interpreting assignments, be given the opportunity to analyze and then render interpretations of highly-technical content, engage in reflective practice regarding past experiences and application to future practice, and discuss strategies and engage in techniques for utilizing a co-interpreter for support during an assignment. Ideal for practitioners working in highly-technical settings which may include higher education, interpreting for d/Deaf professionals, and other nuanced settings requiring use of specialized vocabulary. Prefer attendees to have 3-5 years of professional experience; however, interpreters of all experiences, including students, are welcome.
Educational objectives for the workshop include:
- Analyze a pre-determined set of materials for preparation
- Create and modify preparation materials to be utilized during a rendered interpretation
- Synthesize how past interpreting experiences could have been more effective with the utilization of preparation materials and theorize how to implement techniques into future practice
- Render interpretation and analyze for effectiveness
- Brainstorm ideas for techniques when working with a co-interpreter and how to implement them in practice.
Lindsay C. Nickels, M.A., NIC is an ASL/English interpreter at the University of Cincinnati. She received an A.A.S. and B.A.S. in Sign Language Interpreting Studies from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Siena Heights University, respectively, and has an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University. She has been a practitioner in the field for nearly 12 years with a primary focus on the postsecondary education environment, but also with experience ranging from theatre and music, to government, to conference and platform environments. Nine of her 12 years have been spent serving in the capacity of a staff interpreter at post-secondary institutions, interpreting in more than 200 classes with varying educational levels, language modes, and technical content. She has also worked as adjunct faculty for two interpreting programs over the course of eight years. Lindsay’s research pursuits have led to both domestic and international presentations in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Turkey. Her current research involves study of the discursive representation of d/Deafness and an investigation of interpreter discourse in online forums.
Katherine W. Vance, MS, NIC, SC:L is currently working as the Supervisor for CART and Interpreting Services at the University of Cincinnati (UC) where she over sees the Communication Access Team and provides ASL/English interpreting services to the UC community. She earned her B.S. in Interpreter Training at Eastern Kentucky University and her M.S in Interpreting Pedagogy at the University of North Florida. Katherine has worked as a practitioner for twelve years and gained a range of experience working for a large interpreting agency, as a freelance interpreter, and full time at a public institution. In her roles as the supervisor of interpreting services, Katherine has experience managing and coordinating interpreting schedules as well as providing interpreting services in a variety of academic majors across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Additionally, in her prior work in the community Katherine has provided interpreting services in various highly-technical settings requiring specialized knowledge or experience. Katherine’s previous research projects included investigating iPads as a bridge to communication and d/Deaf professionals’ expectations of designated interpreters.
Cancellations received by 5:00 p.m. EST on 20 April 2018 will receive a full refund. Cancellations received after 20 April but before 27 April 2018 by 5:00 p.m. will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be issued after 28 April 2018.

Light refreshments will be provided in the morning and in the afternoon; however, participants will be on their own for lunch. There are many options both on campus and in the area surrounding campus.
Registration fee is $60.00 for individuals who pre-register by 30 April 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Students who wish to attend must include the name of their current interpreter education program (or other degree which they are seeking) and a fee of $20.00.
