UC*METRO

UC*Metro is the name of the partnership, funded in part by UC Student Government and the university administration, that provides discounted rides on any Metro bus, at anytime, on any Metro route for UC students, faculty and staff.  The contract between UC and Metro would have ended on April 30, 2009.  It has been extended and modified by mutual agreement through summer quarter 2009.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE METRO/UC FARE CARDS:

  1. Will there be a charge for  summer quarter 2009 Fare Cards?  Yes.  Effective with the issuance of summer quarter 2009 Metro/UC Fare Cards, Fare Card holders will be asked to pay the following charge online during registration by using a major credit card or debit card:

Summer Quarter 2009 Fare Card Charges

Student Charge:  $15                            Employee Charge:  $60

Summer Quarter 2009 Fare Cards are valid June 22 through September 30, 2009
Registration for Summer Quarter Fare Cards begins June 8, 2009.

  2. Is there another way to register and/or pay for a Metro/UC Fare Card, such as by telephone?  No.  All registrations must occur at the Metro/UC Fare Card secure web site.  All Fare Card payments must be made by major credit card or debit card at the Metro/UC Fare Card secure web site.
  3. How can I pay for the Metro/UC Fare Card if I don't have a personal credit card or debit card?  At the moment there are three options available for individuals to pay for a UC/Metro Registration Fee who don’t have personal credit cards or a personal debit card that is linked to their personal checking account.
    1. Pre-paid Debit Card Option:   Individuals can purchase pre-paid debit cards at local banks; National City and PNC are two that do this.  Walgreen’s also sells pre-paid debit cards.  There is a small fee associated with the card, but it appears to be similar to the price one would pay for a money order.
    2. Gift Card Option:  Through local banks individuals can purchase a gift card and load it with their chosen dollar amount.  National City and PNC may also have this option and the card is through VISA or MasterCard.  Please check with your banking institution.
    3. Pay your fee to a relative or friend and use their credit or debit card to charge the fee.
All registration must be done online and the above three options provide methods for individuals to use the online system and pay the required fee.  There may be other options in the future, but for the time being this is what is currently available.
  4. Are the Students and Employees paying the full cost for the Fare Cards?   No.  For the past two years, per the agreement between UC and Metro, UC Student Government and UC administration were able to subsidize the cost of the Metro/UC Fare Cards.  That agreement would have ended on April 30.  It has been extended and modified by mutual agreement.  The new agreement between UC and Metro recognizes that Metro has taken on a substantial increase in costs because of the program.  The increased costs are beyond the capability of UC Student Government and UC administration to fully subsidize.  Therefore, Students and Employees who make use of subsidized rides are being asked to contribute to the cost of the Fare Card program.  The university will continue to subsidize the Metro/UC Fare Card Program.
  5. What is the cost of a one-way, one-zone ride on the Metro?  Currently a one-way ride in Zone 1 is $1.50.  To view other Metro fare information, please go to:  http://www.go-metro.com/fares.html.
  6. What will the cost of the Fare Cards be for autumn quarter 2009?  UC and Metro will be negotiating continuation of the program for autumn quarter 2009.  When these talks have been concluded, the UC community will be notified.
  7. Who is eligible to receive a Metro/UC Fare Card? In general, Students are eligible if they are enrolled in the current UC academic quarter/term, and UC Employees are also eligible. Students who are in their co-op term are also eligible to apply for the card.
  8. Special note for Summer Quarter eligibility.  Students who are either registered for Summer Quarter, or are enrolled for Autumn Quarter 09, or were enrolled in Spring Quarter 09 should be eligible to purchase a Metro/UC Fare Card for Summer Quarter.
  9. Want to find out if you are eligible?  It's easy.  Just go to the Metro/UC Fare Card registration site and enter your username and password.  If you are not eligible, you will know right away as the system will not allow you to enter the registration site.
  10. How do I acquire a Metro/UC Fare Card? All currently enrolled students, and current employees, must register each quarter at the Metro/UC Fare Card web site in order to receive their special Metro/UC Fare Cards.
  11. How long will my Metro/UC Fare Card be valid?  All Fare Cards are valid as of the first day of the academic quarter for which they are issued and expire on the first day of the following academic quarter.
  12. How do I use the Metro/UC Fare Card?  All Fare Card holders should swipe their Metro/UC Fare Card in the reader on the bus.  Metro no longer accepts UC photo ID cards as proof of ride eligibility.
  13. How long does it take to receive a Metro/UC Fare Card? Once you have registered, the special Metro/UC Fare Card will be mailed to the address you provide within about seven to ten business days.  Therefore, accuracy is important.  Please be aware that postal holidays will affect the delivery of mail. If you do not receive your card within this time frame, please contact:  Marie.Sutthoff@uc.edu.
  14. What happens if I lose my Metro/UC Fare Card? There is a charge for replacement of a Metro/UC Fare Card (see below) which must be paid online by credit card at the Metro/UC Fare Card secure web site.  When you are issued a replacement card, the card it replaces will be deactivated by Metro.

Summer Quarter 2009 Replacement Card Charges

Student Replacement Charge:  $50        Employee Replacement Charge:  $60

  15. Do Access riders need to use a Metro/UC Fare Card?
