The Alternative Spring Break program is a national initiative instituted on college campuses across the country. The objective is to provide students an opportunity to engage in a week-long service project, as well as to give students an alternative option to the typical spring break party atmosphere. As evidenced by the enthusiastic participation in past UC trips to Kentucky, Mexico, Alabama, New Orleans, and more, many students look to the ASB program as a means to serve the local and global community, as a way to gain insight into how people live in different parts of the country and world, and as a resource to develop their leadership skills. The ASB program fosters the development of leadership and civic responsibility as students are immersed into a culture different than their own and invited to share in the community's effort to fulfill its needs. |

Alternative Break opportunities at UC are primarily administered through Serve Beyond Cincinnati (SBC), a student-run organization providing multicultural world service experiences to UC students through participation in construction projects that increase quality of life. They seek to inspire and empower students to positively benefit the communities of the world throughout their lives. |
Alternative Spring Break trips start forming during fall quarter and Alternative Winter Break trips start forming during spring quarter.

History
The University of Cincinnati s first Alternative Spring Break trip was organized in 1999. A single trip was planned to travel to Jackson County, Kentucky to work with an organization called the Christian Appalachian Project. Despite the fact that only two students participated, the seed was planted for a program that would soon blossom into much more. The two years that followed offered the same ASB location to Kentucky through the Christian Appalachian Project (CAP). As news about ASB spread, mainly through word of mouth, the volunteer group size grew each year.
Since then, trips have been organized to sites as diverse as New Orleans, Alabama, Mexico, Detroit, Kentucky, New York, and El Salvador. For information on the history of SBC, click here.
